PLAYGROUND SAFETY SURFACING
A SOFT SURFACE IS A SAFE SURFACE
We avoid installing playgrounds over hard surfaces such as concrete or asphalt to prevent injuries if the children should fall. We also avoid using grass or dirt as a base, they promote wear, and low shock absorbance. The best option is to use loose fill materials such as playground mulch, shredded rubber, sand, pea gravel, wood chips, or wood mulch (if it has not been treated with chemical preservatives such as chromate copper arsenate. We can also use unitary materials to create a protective surface in playgrounds.
Our best choice of unitary materials includes rubber tiles, mats, and a mixture of materials that can absorb energy. These materials are suitable because they cannot be compressed and can be used for the protective surface of playgrounds installed over concrete or asphalt. These playground surfaces come in different colors and designs; the brighter colors are most suitable when the playground is installed in areas where the sunlight is intense.
PLAYGROUND SAFETY
While playing children can trip and fall, however, they will not sustain bruises if the playground has an adequate protective surfacing. Majority of the injuries sustained on playgrounds happen when children fall. This is why your playground should have these protective materials placed beneath all playground equipment.
According to reports from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 200,000 children below fourteen years sustain injuries that require treatment in an emergency room. These injuries include internal injuries, severe fractures, concussions, and other types of bruises. Some of these cases have been fatal. The reported casualty figure can be reduced when the playground has adequate protective surfacing.
Our range of playground equipment and products include two types of playground surfacing options. One of these products is affordable and needs to be redone after a while, the other product lasts longer, slightly more expensive and has low maintenance requirements.
BEST PLAYGROUND SURFACES
Every playground we install features only the best playground surfaces to increase safety. We use loose fill materials such as the engineered wood fiber (Wood chips) because they are affordable and perfect for shock absorbance. They are also easy to maintain.
When mulch is used to create the playground surface, it must be top dressed every two or three years. This is done because of its organic constituents.
Playgrounds surfaced with unitary materials have smooth surfaces with a consistent texture. This is achieved because of the bonded rubber and synthetic turf used for the surfacing.
On the other hands, there are more expensive options for playground surfacing. Loose fill materials can be installed by specialists. These materials are extremely durable and require less maintenance. These materials are poured in place so they don’t wear easily.
