The community of Sandoval HOA off Sandoval Parkway in Cape Coral, Florida has got luxury amenities to cater to the private upscale community. After installing a playground replete with 8 foot platforms, loose rubber mulch, and a set of swings with multiple swing bays, the community realized they weren’t getting much use out of the playground during the hot months of May through November. The slide bedways and loose rubber mulch can easily exceed 140 degrees in the peak of summer. They elected to cover the playground area with as much shade as possible.
Based on the contained sidewalk space and existing grass, as well as interest in a future multimillion dollar clubhouse expansion, it was evident they had a restricted footprint to work with. We maximized the space by putting a drone in the air and pinpointing the maximum coverage we could allot to the area without affecting the sidewalks while still offering the greatest amount of coverage. The large platforms that allow kids to stand 8 feet off the ground also meant that we needed to raise the canopy to clear the platforms by the required playground safety standard’s height designation. We also elected to install the post columns of the shade so that we wouldn’t have any exposed hardware nor base plates at the bottom of the playground shade. With footers that were 4 by 4 by 3 foot deep, each of the holes to be dug included a minimum 1.5 cubic yards of dirt to be extracted and replaced with the appropriate engineered footer dimensions for concrete and rebar and J bolts.
This shade project, as well as all of our other shade projects in Florida, required engineering to the local wind rating standards and [field 00:05:57] drawings to assure the proper sized footers for significant wind uplift. Total project duration was six months, and the total installation time was about a week and a half. Based on 2019 pricing, the project was around $32,000.00, which would be closer to 45 to $50,000.00 for 2023 pricing.
