Hickory Hammock HOA located in Winter Garden, Florida is a large family-oriented community surrounded by multiple lakes. The center of the community features the thriving resort style pool, as well as a large playground area that serves as the center of the community. The pool area had several umbrellas that would need to be replaced multiple times throughout the year due to severe thunderstorms coming off the lakes and the harsh UV rays of the sun.
Their solution in offering shade coverage around the pool area was to install two 20 by 10 foot, 8 foot high cantilevers on the periphery of the pool deck. Each of the cantilevers could easily house four chaise lounges or two tables with four seats around each of the tables for diners and bathers. The cantilever design allowed us to install the support columns on the exterior of the paver deck which prevented us from digging up the pool deck and adversely affecting the plumbing to the pool and also the landscaping irrigation pipes running throughout the garden beds.
Because of the limited access all of the footers were hand dug and material needed to be removed from the pool area. The original builder also had a 33 foot by 10 foot wide pergola installed on the back of the pool area, suitable for social gatherings and birthday parties. The pergola design however didn’t include for any shade coverage and we were able to add the wind rated all net shade fabric on the top of the pergola, providing 100% shade coverage for bathers. The cantilever shade structures are wind rated to 105 miles an hour with the shade fabric installed with the quick release glide elbow systems, the shade fabric can easily be removed and taken down for storage, cleaning, or inclement weather with wind gusts at or exceeding 105 miles an hour.
The support columns and footers were engineered for a wind rating of 140 miles an hour, which is standard for the Winter Garden area. Installed in November of 2021. Total cost of the project was around $32,000. In 2023 pricing, I believe we would be closer to $40,000 for the same product. Installation duration was approximately two weeks. The cantilever designs were the second phase of the shade addition to the clubhouse amenities area, and we had installed a playground shade the previous year over the main play structure of the adjacent play area.
